The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is the federal organization charged with enforcing the Animal Welfare Act, which sets basic standards of care for certain kinds of animals bred for commercial resale. The USDA admits to a deficient and problematic record in the inspection of dog breeding facilities. There are a greater number of facilities than the number of inspectors to visit these facilities. Often times, breeders are allowed to perform self-inspections. In May 2010, the USDA’s Inspector General issued a scathing 69-page report addressing failures in inspection practices. The report PDF report can be downloaded here .
Vets usually prescribe aspirin for dogs with osteoarthritis or musculoskeletal inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin help reduce the pain and inflammation associated with these conditions and can offer your dog relief from symptoms.
Veterinarians also use aspirin to treat a variety of other conditions. If you have a question about why your vet recommended administering aspirin, call the office. Thanks to some of the more serious side effects associated with the drug, aspirin is not a medication that owners should give their dogs without veterinary approval, so be sure to pay close attention to your veterinarian’s instructions.
My German Shepherd 4 . was put on Rimadyl this past Friday as a pain/anti inflammatory med for a lump found on her muzzle. There was no dx this was just to help with the swelling along with an anitbiotic. Today is Tuesday and she can no longer climb the stairs in our house! She was perfectly fine on Friday so far as her legs were concerned! I called the vet and they got me an appointment tomorrow afternoon….ugh. Needless to say I HAVE STOPPED the meds, not that they told me to…and her lump hasn’t changed. Hopefully I’ve caught this in time. I’m so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story.
