As West Germany was reorganised and gained independence from its occupiers, the German Democratic Republic was established in East Germany in 1949. The creation of the two states solidified the 1945 division of Germany. [24] On 10 March 1952, (in what would become known as the " Stalin Note ") Stalin put forth a proposal to reunify Germany with a policy of neutrality, with no conditions on economic policies and with guarantees for "the rights of man and basic freedoms, including freedom of speech, press, religious persuasion, political conviction, and assembly" and free activity of democratic parties and organizations. [25] This was turned down; reunification was not a priority for the leadership of West Germany, and the NATO powers declined the proposal, asserting that Germany should be able to join NATO and that such a negotiation with the Soviet Union would be seen as a capitulation. There have been several debates about whether a real chance for reunification had been missed in 1952.

Poppe hung out with East German dissidents as a teenager, got blackballed out of college, and was busted in 1974 by the police on the thin pretext of "asocial behavior." On her way out of jail, Stasi agents asked her to be an informant, to spy on her fellow radicals, but she refused. ("I was just 21, but I knew I shouldn't trust the Stasi, let alone sign anything," she says.) She went on to become a founding member of a reform-minded group called Women for Peace, and was eventually arrested 13 more times — and imprisoned in 1983 for treason. Only an international outcry won her release.

What made it acutally “a thing” in the first place was, that these children often came form deprived areas or had problems like delinquency.
Lower educated parents call their children “Kevin” or other
exotic-sounding-names, more often – at least: that´s what everybody
thinks!
I really feel sorry for people with names like Jaqueline or
Kevin. But on the other hand I don´t know any “Kevins” so I couldn´t
proove the point nor name an opposite example. There actually aren´t that many
“Kevins”.

My Leipzig roommate and his family were avid FKKers, in fact, during the year I spent in Leipzig, his father assumed the chair of the nudist club to which the family had belonged since the GDR times. During a weekend visit to A., my roommate’s hometown, we took a walk that included a stop by the club’s grounds. Thankfully this happened in the fall, so we were all bundled up, but the site was a modest set-up with a small pond, a grassy area for volleyball, badminton and sunbathing and an adjacent wood for those wanting to do a bit of wandering about. Very simple and reminiscent of 60s era campgrounds once common to North America.
